OK, this post is one of my most favorite on Zlinks!A few posts ago I added a video by Andy Mckee in which he was playing a very unique instrument which was totally unknown to me. After linking the post on a message board one poster commented that the instrument is actually a called harp guitar. The top part of it is the harp part and the lower part is the guitar part.
The rest of this entry contains the top 10 harp guitar videos i have seen. This is really a beautiful instrument, enjoy.
- Don Alder playing a song called Sayonara. Amazing finger picking work, but only a few harmonics.
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/-vocEYP0NsI” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Michael Hedges playing a song called Because It’s There. He originally wrote this song for a movie and the style it is played in is very similar to Andy Mckee’s where there are a lot of hammers and harmonics. The bass line on the harp is great.
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/JTC7kPZZmuM” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Eric Loy. All i can say is i wish this video was more clear. Enjoy it for the sound more than the video because just by listening you can hear in the insane finger picking abilities this guy has.
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docid=5263513133288506995″ width=”400″ height=”326″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Andy Mckee again! This clip was taken from the Canadian Guitar Festival and the song is called Into the Ocean. I find the title funny because Andy Mckee is from Kansas, a land locked state. lol
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/zy0OANNQgyU” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Stacy Hobbs playing Dust in the Wind on a harp guitar! It’s amazing and sounds like there is a small band playing with him. No harmonics that i could see, but I don’t think the original has them so not a problem, even though i have a person love for harmonics. 🙂
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/cmj8iot_DJk” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Gregg Miner playing Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella. For those who do not know, this is a well known Christmas carol. Gregg Miner utilizes some beautiful slides in this rendition.
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/9xHbZSCONHs” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - John Doan playing some very delicate riffs. You can see from his face that he is feeling it. This is the kind of music that is synomonous with serenity. Not much harp work, but just the right amount.
[kml_flashembed movie=”http://www.youtube.com/v/dBPZ5kvhIXw” width=”425″ height=”350″ wmode=”transparent” /] - Paolo Giordano playing a harp guitar almost as if it were a piano. Short video but its cool to see his hands work their magic.

Love the vids expecially the first on by Alder. Its got a very neat vibe and has lots of interesting melodic shifts.
